The Secretary General of the Union MuzaffarQuereshi moderated the proceedings. The Spanish Ambassador to Pakistan, His Excellency Javier Carbajosa Sanchez was the chief guest.

Welcoming the gathering, ESU President Retired Major General Masud Akram began by thanking Mr Malik for his generous offer to host the occasion. He then spoke of his aims to make the ESU a more vibrant and well known organization. He said that the Union promotes mutual advancement of education of the English-speaking peoples of the world, respecting their heritage, traditions and aspirations, the events and issues of the day affecting them and their inter-relationships. ESU 1

He said that the use of English as a shared language is a means of international communication of knowledge and understanding, provided that these are at all times pursued in a non-political and non-sectarian manner. He invited Ambassador Sanchez to give his key note address.

Sharing his experiences of serving in Pakistan, Mr. Sanchez said that Pakistanis are the most resilient people in the world. They have faced tragedies of the 2005 earthquake, the floods in 2010- 11, the massacre at The Army Public School, Wagah border and hundreds of other incidents of terrorism. Mr. Sanchez noted that all these events did not affect the nation’s morale to fight the threat of terrorism. He said that the world acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts against terrorism and appreciates the successes of the Zarb-i-Azb military operation.

Mr. Sanchez opined that Pakistan has started moving in the right direction as democracy is gaining strength. He added signs are visible that the people of Pakistan, irrespective of their linguistic differences, are rising as a united nation against the menace of terrorism, crime and corruption. These are great times, Sanchez said, as nationhood is the fundamental factor for nations to achieve growth and prosperity. ESU 2

The Spanish Ambassador said that Pakistan has huge potential for growth. Its ideally located geography, vast agricultural lands and above all, a very willing work force, all contribute as necessary ingredients to sustain high growth rates.

There followed a question-answer session and the putting forth of suggestions related to membership, activities and other points of general interest which would make the ESU a more vibrant organization. This was followed by the re-election of the incumbent President, Vice President and other office-bearers.

Business over, dinner was served and the gracious hostess also joined the gathering, making sure everyone was looked after, which we were, while enjoying the delicious specialties that were served.

The English-Speaking Union (ESU) is an international educational charity which was founded by the journalist Sir Evelyn Wrench in 1918.
