ISLAMABAD: Joint meeting of parliament will be held today (Monday) to discuss the situation of Yemen and to formulate a foreign policy regarding the security of neighbor countries especially Saudi Arabia. Unanimous resolution for the unity of Muslim Ummah, peaceful resolution of Yemen dispute and ensuring territorial integrity and sovereignty of Saudi Arabia would be passed during the joint sitting. Guidelines for mentioning the role of Pakistan for the resolution of the Yemen crisis would be given in the resolution. This is first joint sitting of the parliament during the tenure of current government which is going to be held on any international dispute.
Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will take parliament into confidence regarding its efforts for the peaceful resolution of the Yemen crisis.
According to details, the meeting will be held at 11:00am whereas Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif will present a resolution in the joint session. The report of the high level delegation which visited Saudi Arabia few days back will be presented during the joint sitting. Parliamentary leaders of all parliamentary parties, senior ministers and senior parliamentarians will take part in the debate on the Yemen situation.
Senior politicians have hailed this step of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and have said that the Islamic world eye this session for a final decision.
The session has been convened on the advice of PM Nawaz in order to discuss the prevailing situation in war-hit Yemen.
The decision to hold a joint session was taken during a high-level consultative meeting headed by PM Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad on Thursday.
Foreign Office Spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said the parliamentary proceedings might take more than a day. It was unclear if there would be a vote.
“There will probably be a debate,” she said. “Obviously they will expect statements from the delegation that went to Saudi Arabia.”
Moreover, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said that parliament would decide as to what role Pakistan should play in the Yemen conflict.
He said the government would accept and honour the decision taken by the parliament in this regard.
