Royal baby: Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton gives birth to baby boy

LONDON: Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge has given a birth to a baby boy, the future heir to the British throne, at St Mary’s hospital in London.

The boy and his mother Kate Middleton are doing well. She will be spending the night in hospital.

The former Kate Middleton gave birth to the couple’s first child, a son, on Monday afternoon.

The birth was announced via a formal press release issued by Kensington Palace

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm.

The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.

Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight.

A bulletin containing details of the birth will also be taken by car to Buckingham Palace to be placed on an easel at the palace gates for the public to see. Initially, officials had planned to place the bulletin on the easel before issuing the news electronically, but changed course shortly before the birth was announced.

The former Kate Middleton and William became engaged in October 2010 during a trip to Kenya and were married in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.
