INDIANAPOLIS: Carlos Munoz, a 21-year-old Colombian who finished second at this year’s Indianapolis 500 in his IndyCar debut, was named Monday as a full-time 2014 driver for Michael Andretti’s team.
Munoz, who raced most of this year in the Indy Lights development series, joins Americans Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay and Canadian James Hinchcliffe on a squad that has produced four season series champions, most recently Hunter-Reay in 2012.
“Carlos stepped up this season and showed outstanding potential on track,” Andretti said. “We are looking forward to welcoming him as a full time IndyCar
driver and seeing what 2014 has in store. We are confident that his success in
Indy Lights will carry on into his IndyCar career.”
Munoz was the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year after starting on the front row at the famed 2 1/2-mile oval and leading the iconic race for 12 laps before settling for second behind Brazilian Tony Kanaan.
Munoz also raced in IndyCar events on the streets of Toronto in July and the oval season-ender at Fontana, California.
“Finally my dream has come true,” Munoz said. “After so many years of racing and all the sacrifices — leaving my family in Colombia and going to Europe to race, then coming to the US — finally, I’m a professional race car driver in the maximum category.
“To be a part of this team, they believe a lot in me and to pay them back would be to bring them great results. I’m really happy and I’m looking forward to start practicing and testing.”
