It was originally serialised in The London Magazine during 1905 and first published as a book a year later.

The story concerns a family who move to “Three Chimneys”, a house near the railway, after the father is wrongly accused of spying.

The children befriend a traveller who gets the 9.15 train every day and he eventually helps prove the father’s innocence.

Apart from The Railway Childre, Nesbit’s best-known books are The Story of the Treasure Seekers and The Wouldbegoods, which both recount stories about the Bastables, a middle class family that has fallen on hard times.

One of Nesbit’s admirers, playwright Noel Coward, once wrote that she “had an economy of phrase, and an unparalleled talent for evoking hot summer days in the English countryside”.

She died in Kent aged 65.
