Former prime minister says he will meet with his chief ministers and parliamentary party to announce the timing of the exit By Ghulam Haider Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan said Saturday that his party would be quitting the regional legislature assemblies in the latest twist of political turmoil and economic instability in the country. Khan, chairman of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), made this political ploy public while addressing a gathering of his cheering supporters near Rawalpindi Garrison in his first appearance after being wounded in an assassination attempt at a public rally earlier this month in Punjab -- the most populous province ruled by a PTI-led coalition. Since his ouster in the wake of a parliament...

Neither a clean chit nor a conviction: the drawn out Supreme Court (SC) case probing the Sharif family’s alleged corruption ended today as the court ordered the formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe how money was transferred to Qatar. The prime minister and his party breathed a sigh of relief, as the fear of an 'extreme verdict' — the premier's ouster — dissolved and gave way to celebrations. A five-judge bench, comprising Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, had examined arguments presented by the PTI, the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), the Watan Party and the All Pakistan Muslim League, who framed the case out of court as a campaign against ...

Sughra Tunio Standing on the balcony of his two-storey riverside hotel in Matta, Bilal Mustafa is enthusiastic about the inauguration of a micro-hydroelectric power station in this town in Swat, a mountainous district in Pakistan’s northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “The cheap electricity from the station will boost the hotel industry in the area and slash the cost of running hotels and motels,” Mustafa says. “Escalating fuel wood prices pose (a) threat to the sustainability of our hotel businesses.” Perched along the lower reaches of the Swat River, which snakes through the district, Matta is popular with tourists the breathtaking waterfalls and lakes that feed the river, a ma...

It may not be a ‘real Pakistan’, the one dreamt by Quaid-i-Azam, Allama Iqbal and the founding fathers but it’s a much better Pakistan today than the one witnessed in the 80s and 90s when Imran Khan was playing cricket and Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto were conspiring with the establishment against each other. Thus, the return of old Pakistan would be a disaster for this country. Imran Khan showed interest in politics in 1993 for the first time after playing cricket for 21 years and entered politics by making Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In 18 years, the PTI has emerged as the second largest party in the 2013 elections. During all these years, Imran spent eight days in jail and sat on hunger strike for 48 hours. He has bro...

Editorial The hectic, perhaps even frantic, shuttling back and forth of political intermediaries between the PML-N and PTI camps had suggested that perhaps some kind of middle ground could be reached and the growing atmosphere of political crisis could be calmed down. Unhappily, neither the PML-N nor the PTI appears to be in any mood to back down first — or at least before the eleventh hour, which is nearly here. The PML-N has had the capital’s administration enforce the infamous Section 144 of the criminal code that prohibits the public display of weapons — and most importantly, curbs the public’s right of freedom to assemble. Without a shred of doubt, no matter what the PML-N leadership or the Islamabad administration ma...

Mehmood Ul Hassan Khan United we stand, disunited we fall. It is the lesson of ancient wisdom and modern civilization too. Nations tend to be doomed when disunity prevails. Unity is strength and disunity is now spreading like an epidemic disease in the country. Political heat, humidity and stupidity have reached near its peak. Culture of political dialogue, statesmanship and diplomacy are inching towards “point of no return”. Such are the sad affairs of statesmanship. Vultures of power have already enhanced tally of controversies. Now August 14, the Independence Day seems no more to be a day of unity, peace and stability. All efforts are being carried out to make it a day of disunity, protest, and disability. Everyone from top t...

Saleem Shaikh An ambitious economic growth initiative focusing on efficient and sustainable use of natural resources has been launched by the governing political party in northwest province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
