PFUJ serves legal notice on Afzal Butt, Khursheed Abbasi

KARACHI: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) , through their attorneys, have served legal notice on Mr Afzal Butt, a resident of Rawalpindi, for impersonating as president of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists.

A similar notice has been served on Mr Khursheed Abbasi, a resident of Karachi, for claiming to be the Secretary-General of PFUJ. The notices have been sent through Shoaib M Ashraf & Co.

It has been stated in the legal notice that Mr Afzal Butt contested the election of PFUJ for 2013-15 as a candidate of President of PFUJ against Mr Rana M Azeem, wherein Mr Rana M Azeem was elected as President.
Mr Butt despite his defeat impersonated as the President of PFUJ on different occasions before various forums.

It has been stated in the legal notice that Mr Afzal Butt, in connivance with some media groups, damaged the cause of the working journalists for the benefit of owners of such media groups who promoted him as President of PFUJ with full knowledge of his defeat and his illegal manipulated claim.

It has been reminded that the two were exploiting the official logos of PFUJ duly registered under the law of Trade Mark Ordinance 2001; the Intellectual Property Organisation of Pakistan Act 2012 and the Copyrights Ordinance, 1962, in the name of Muhammed Amin Yousuf, the Secretary-General of the PFUJ.

The unauthorized and illegal use of the registered logo is a criminal act on his part, it has been stated in the notice.

It has also been stated that Mr Afzal Butt was misusing the logo of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the act of exploitation of international association of journalists is defaming not only the working journalists of Pakistan but also the country itself.

Under the law, only PFUJ is authorized by the IFJ to publish, print etc its logo.

Mr Afzal Butt have been advised to refrain from claiming as President of PFUJ and also to use, exploit, publish, print etc logos of PFUJ and IFJ with immediate effect after receiving this legal notice.

“In case of your failure, we have clear instructions from our clients to proceed against you and your associates, abettors and facilitators in the criminal and civil courts of law, ” stated the attorneys.
