CHICAGO: At least two people were injured in an explosion at a chemical plant in south suburban Chicago on Friday morning.

Police officials said the explosion and resulting fire happened just before noon at Blue Island Phenol LLC, 3550 W. 131st St., in Alsip.

Fire departments from multiple towns responded to the explosion, NBCChicago reports and adds smoke could be seen billowing from the plant, and at one point foam was used to douse flames.

Blue Island Phenol plant manager Bill Moffatt told the Associated Press two people were injured as a result of the fire. All other employees were accounted for.

Moffatt said there was a leak of what he called “gas material,” but he was not sure if that triggered an explosion or if it simply ignited the fire.

There were no area evacuations, but surrounding streets were closed.

The two people injured were taken to ChristHospital in Oak Lawn. The extent of their injuries is not known.
