NEW DELHI: The activities of a new revolutionary political group, the madrasa-based Hefazet-e-Islam, has upset India, which views it “as Inimical to the interests of a stable, democratic Bangladesh”, writes an Indian daily.
The political group reportedly patronised by both the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is set to go to the polls on January 5, 2014 to elect its 10th Parliament amid a protracted political crisis. The Opposition combine has initiated a new wave of agitation to undo what it calls a “unilateral election.”
Interestingly, the political crisis of the small South Asian nation has drawn global attention of varying dimensions. Some of Bangladesh’s “foreign friends” are subscribing to what the ruling “pro-liberation” secular political parties stand for, and others are possibly lending weight to the anti-government protagonists who largely pursue political Islam, including militancy.
The stand taken by the country’s “foreign friends” has come into public discourse too. The Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies see an “Indian hand” behind the ruling Awami League’s views.
Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh also known as Hifazat-e-Islam Bangladesh is a madrasa based Islamic group in Bangladesh, was formed in January 2010. This group, politically backed by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, was formed in 2010 to protest against the secular education policy of Bangladeshi government.
