Chinese Government Acknowledges Pakistani Expert Contributions in Healthcare Sector

Every year a big number of foreigners come to China and many of them excel in their field. some of them play a pivotal role in the society while a few of them establish the basis of international development & are recognized across borders. Dr. Muhammad Shahbaz, President of China Pakistan Medical Association is a proud Pakistani Surgeon & Medical Expert whose initiative of Silk Road Health Corridor also known as China Pakistan Health Corridor has been recognized well among the international medical community especially by Chinese Government and was conferred the Ambassador of Silk Road Friendship Award and now his initiative has been appreciated by the National Development & Reforms Commission People’s Republic of china.

National Development & Reforms Commission recently published an article appreciating the contribution of Pakistani Medical Expert about his contribution towards the China Pakistan Medical Cooperation. Muhammad Shahbaz, President of China Pakistan Medical Association a Pakistani who graduated from China’s Shandong University as a PhD in surgical sciences, has been living and working as Clinical fellow of Qilu Hospital in east China’s Shandong Province for 16 years.

In an exclusive interview to Economic Affairs, Dr. Muhammad Shahbaz said that he is pleased to see his initiative recognized by Chinese Government. It’s an honor for me to represent Pakistan and I am always trying to make some positive change in the society and do something for the healthcare system of Pakistan especially the people in the remote and improvised areas of Pakistan. This recognition will boost my moral and I will work diligently for the China Pakistan Health Corridor and promote the cooperation in medical sector between China & Pakistan and belt & road countries. Since a child, Shahbaz has had a dream, which is to make a difference for those living in remote areas who cannot afford expensive medical costs. He wants to build a chain of hospitals and mobile hospitals connected via Telemedicine & Big Data in the remote areas of Pakistan. He wants to build a hospital in his village and wants to invite President of China H.E President Xi to inaugurate this hospital. In September 2019, the Sino-Pak International Joint Lab for Drug Safety was inaugurated at Xi’an Jiaotong University, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. In the same year,  Shahbaz attended the annual conference of the Belt and Road Tropical Medical Alliance, where he made proposals for meeting the challenges facing the “health corridor.”

While promoting China-Pakistan medical exchanges and cooperation, Shahbaz has left his footprints on a number of places in China and witnessed drastic changes happening to the Chinese people, which has been a source of inspiration for his writing. He often publishes articles on Pakistani and Chinese media to share what he sees and learns in China. After the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, Shahbaz, who was in Pakistan at the time, hailed China’s epidemic response in an article he published on China Daily. “China has proved that it’s a responsible and dedicated nation. It’s a role model for countries around the world to learn that nothing is impossible in this world,” he wrote.

Besides, he has also actively joined online meetings held by the BRIMEA and the China-Pakistan Trade Hotline Cloud Salon Joint Contribution to Health Corridor, while helping Pakistani students to participate in Belt and Road TCM online training for better TCM development in Pakistan. To date, the two countries have already kicked off formal cooperation on TCM and herbal medicine.

In 2021 he played a key role for the medical cooperation among various medical institutes of China and Pakistan including WHO Traditional Medicine Foundation, Health Services Academy, Shandong Digihuman, Wuhan University & Shanghai University of Science & Technology. USST signed MoU with China Pakistan Medical Association for establishment of China Pakistan Technology Park for training of Medial & engineer personnel.  He introduced that nearly 20,000 Pakistani students have obtained bachelor’s degree in medical sciences in China since 2001. According to China Bureau of Statistics & Ministry of Education Data there are more than 492,000 foreign students and  28000 Pakistani students enrolled in China. They are excited by China-Pakistan medical cooperation programs and look forward to more of these programs, especially those about the “health corridor.”

Shahbaz said he hopes that China-Pakistan Medical association can help build advanced Belt and Road hospitals in Pakistan’s impoverished regions and that are connected to the “health corridor” through the means of mobile hospitals and telemedicine. Ahmed Farooq, Minister of the Embassy of Pakistan in China, believes that the “health corridor” would make communication and exchanges between China and Pakistan in the medical sector closer. He said it generates positive impacts and frontier viewpoints, sets an example for medical and health development in other countries and regions, and is an infinite resource that makes everything possible in the future.
