Islamabad: A special court today (Friday) is due to formally charge former military ruler Pervez Musharraf with high treason in a case that could carry the death penalty or life in prison.

Justice Faisal Arab of the Sindh High Court (SHC) will head the special court which will include Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) and Justice Yawar Ali of the Lahore High Court (LHC) as its members.

The latest warrant was issued last week. It alleges that Musharraf violated the constitution by imposing emergency rule in November 2007.

Lawyers for the 70-year-old Musharraf have been asking that he be allowed to travel abroad for treatment.

But the court ruled on January 31 that it had no authority to lift a travel ban imposed against Musharraf.

Musharraf has been in  Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), a military hospital since falling ill with heart trouble while travelling to the special treason tribunal on January 2 and his lawyers had argued he needed specialist treatment abroad.

On the other hand, Police have completed compliance report in connection with arrest warrants of former President Musharraf in high treason case and IG Islamabad will present this report in the court.

Police team led by SP Rural Capt (Retd) Ilyas had served arrest warrants to Musharraf in AFIC on February 3. The former president while receiving the warrants had assured about his appearance in the court.
