The Dutch football federation KNVB has a boat taking part in the day’s high point, a colourful pageant along the city’s historic canals, for the first time. “The football world is a macho world where it is easy to make jokes, especially about gays,” former Dutch international football player P...

Italian cabinet survives ‘momentous’ Silvio Berlusconi verdict

ROME: Italy’s main political forces on Friday promised to keeping an uneasy coalition in place for the sake of the recession-hit country despite a landmark court ruling against former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. “I am fully aware that this is a sensitive time but I am thinking above all of Italy,” Prime Minister Enrico Letta said at a press conference in Rome as he struggles to lead Italy out of a painful recession. “I hope the general interest wins over personal interests — for the good of the country,” he said. Reactions from Berlusconi lawmakers were measured, despite protests against a ruling that bars the billionaire tycoon from being running in elections for the next six years after being co...

Meanwhile, world powers pressed both sides to resolve the impasse peacefully, with US Under Secretary of State William Burns expected in Cairo on Friday night for more talks. Schumpeter: The father of fracking

THE United States has of late been in a slough of despond. The mood is reflected in a spate of books with gloomy titles such as “That Used to Be Us” (Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum) and “Time to Start Thinking: America in the Age of Descent” (Edward Luce). For the first time in decades the majority of Americans think their children will be worse off than they are. Yankee can-do optimism is in danger of congealing into European nothing-can-be-done negativism. There are good reasons for this. The political system really is “even worse than it looks”, as another doom-laden book puts it. Middle-class living standards have stagnated. The Iraq war turned into a debacle. But the pessimists are ignoring...

Advertising to the super-rich: Posters for plutocrats

IF YOU doubt that “the rich are different from you and me”, try visiting a private-jet terminal. One group waiting to board at Farnborough airport near London recently was a family of three generations and five dogs, who would enjoy more in-flight pampering than any economy-class passenger could hope for. Passengers do not linger long: 15 minutes or so before boarding. There are no duty-free shops. But it would be a pity not to tap into these travellers’ deep pockets as they pause between limo and aircraft: if you cannot sell, at least you can market. That is the ambition of Adlux, a Swiss firm that runs ads in private-jet terminals, perhaps the most rarefied form of “out-of-home” advertising, a category that ...

The future of advertising agencies: Omnipotent, or omnishambles?

CROSS-COUNTRY deals in the advertising industry can be painful affairs. Look what happened to Guy MacKendrick, the young executive sent by his London-based agency to oversee its acquisition of a New York rival, in “Mad Men” (yes, it is now compulsory to refer to the hit television series in all articles about the ad business). The staff throw a party to celebrate the takeover, and a drunken secretary drives a lawnmower through the office, shredding Mr MacKendrick’s foot.On July 28th, however, there were no bizarre gardening accidents as executives of two real-life advertising firms toasted their merger with champagne in Paris. Maurice Lévy, the boss of the French Publicis Group, and John Wren, the head of its Ame...
