‘Princess Diana was ‘madly in love’ with Hasnat Khan and ready to move to Pakistan’

Princess Diana, who died in a tragic car crash in 1997 at the age of 36, was madly in love with Hasnat Khan, a Pakistani heart surgeon, and wanted to marry him, even if that meant living in Pakistan, said Jemima Khan, a friend to the princess, of no relation to the surgeon told Vanity Fair. “And that’s one of the reasons why we became friends.” The Princess of Wales reportedly spent a lot of time trying to get to know members of the Khan family with the intent to quietly marry into it, which was not entirely acceptable. For a “son to marry an English girl is every conservative Pashtun mother’s worst nightmare,” said Jemima Khan. Even for Hasnat Khan, discussions of a secret wedding were thought to be &...

Egypt cabinet orders police to end pro-Mohamed Morsi sit-in

CAIRO: Egypt’s cabinet Wednesday ordered a police crackdown on protests by ousted president Mohamed Morsi’s loyalists, as European envoys headed for Cairo to try to ease tensions between the army-installed government and Islamists. The order to the interior minister raised the prospect of a dangerous showdown just days after 82 people were killed at a pro-Morsi protest in Cairo. It came as diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful way out of Egypt’s crisis gathered pace, with the EU and Germany sending envoys to urge a peaceful resolution to the standoff. Adding to the tensions, however, judicial sources said prosecutors had referred the Muslim Brotherhood’s supreme guide to trial for allegedly inciting the killing of ...

Anti-Semitism mars Sweden’s most multicultural city

MALMOE, Sweden: Attacks against Jews in Malmoe, Sweden’s third largest city, have left members of the community questioning their future in a place known for its multiculturalism. Jewish people have lived in Malmoe for over two centuries, often arriving in the south Swedish port city — a safe haven for generations — after fleeing persecution and intolerance in other parts of Europe. But though waves of immigration over the past two decades have made the area more diverse, hate crimes appear to be on the rise and many people — paradoxically — say they feel less secure. Highlighting a problem many Swedes had thought long relegated to history, the US special envoy for anti-Semitism even visited Malmoe last year....

Jessica Ennis-Hill drops out of worlds through injury

LONDON, England: Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill has withdrawn from next month’s athletics world championships because of injury, she said on Wednesday. Ennis-Hill was provisionally named in the Great Britain squad on Tuesday for the competition in Moscow from August 10-18, despite struggling with an Achilles problem for the last few months. But she said in a British Athletics statement: “Up until now, we have been focusing on managing the pain so I can train and get myself in shape to go out there to win in Moscow — which has meant not focusing on finding a cure for the injury. “The time has come now to stop chasing fitness and look to cure the problem.” Ennis-Hill, 27, was one of the stars of...

US economy grows sluggish 1.7% in Q2

WASHINGTON: The US economy grew 1.7 percent in the second quarter, picking up steam from the first quarter, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. The second quarter gross domestic product growth, while better than the 1.1 percent expected, showed the world’s largest economy remained stuck in the doldrums four years after exiting the Great Recession. But GDP revisions to prior quarters revealed a clear trend higher that some analysts said fits with the Federal Reserve’s view that growth will pick up in the second half of the year. The better-than-expected report came as the central bank’s policy-setting committee met for a second and final day in Washington. According to the revisions, GDP growth nearly stalled at 0...

BERLIN, Germany: Prosecutors charged Bayern Munich’s powerful president Uli Hoeness with tax evasion Tuesday, a court said, after a months-long, high-profile probe that has rocked German sport and politics. The superior regional court in Munich said in a statement that it must now decide whether the case brought by the local prosecutor’s office against the chairman of Germany’s most successful football club will go to trial. “Due to the volume of the investigation files as well as the fact that a defence request to delay answering to the charges for one month was granted, a decision by the court on starting a trial is not to be expected before the end of September 2013,” court spokeswoman Andrea Titz said in ...

EU’s Ashton visit ends, but Egypt crisis persists

CAIRO: EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton met Egypt’s ousted Islamist president on Tuesday, saying he was “well,” but the country’s political crisis seemed no closer to resolution despite her efforts. Neither the interim government nor supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi showed any indication that they had shifted their positions after talks with Ashton, who left Cairo on Tuesday. Morsi loyalists continued to rally throughout the day, despite stern warnings from the military and National Defence Council and the deaths of 82 people at a protest on Saturday. Ashton became the first person to officially visit Morsi since his July 3 ouster, holding two hours of talks with him at an undisclosed location ...
